Scriptures: Ruth 1–4 |
The Book of Ruth starts with loss. Naomi loses her husband, her sons, and her sense of any future. What follows is not a rescue of any sort, but an unforeseen loyalty. Her daughter-in-law, Ruth, chooses to stay, to serve her, and to trust the God of Israel even when nothing looks promising. Grace shows up in faithfulness during ordinary, painful moments. There are no miracles yet…just small steps of love and commitment that begin to grow a new story.
As the story unfolds, God’s provision appears in everyday ways. Ruth gleans in a field “by chance,” but truly nothing about it is accidental. Boaz steps in with kindness, protection, and generosity. What looks like a coincidence is actually a careful plan unfolding. God is working through ordinary people who choose obedience, integrity, and care for others.
Of course, by the end of the story, everything has shifted. What started as a loss turns into a legacy. Ruth started as an outsider but becomes part of the family line of Israel! Naomi, once empty, is filled again. Grace is woven through every detail, turning what seemed like an ending into a beginning.
All of this points clearly to Jesus. Boaz becomes a picture of the Redeemer…one who has both the right and the willingness to restore what was lost. Where Boaz redeems a family, Jesus redeems humanity. He welcomes outsiders, restores the broken, and turns quiet faithfulness into eternal significance.
Challenge Question:
Write down two “ordinary” areas of your life…work, relationships, routines…where it’s easy to overlook God’s presence. Then choose one intentional way this week to act with faithfulness, kindness, or integrity in that space, trusting Jesus to work through it.
