Scriptures: 1 Samuel 4–8 |

These chapters reveal what happens when people try to use God without actually trusting Him. In 1 Samuel 4, Israel treats the ark like a tool for victory rather than a symbol of God’s presence. The result is defeat, loss, and the terrifying realization that God cannot be controlled. Grace does show up even in this moment though…God allows the illusion to collapse so His people can see the difference between a ritual and a relationship. His presence is not something to carry around…He is Someone to walk with.

In 1 Samuel 5–7, God proves His power without Israel’s help. Among the Philistines, the ark brings judgment, showing that God is not dependent on His people to defend His name! When the ark returns, Samuel calls Israel back to repentance, and they respond. God restores them, defeats their enemies, and establishes peace. Grace is found in return. No matter how far they drifted, God meets them when they turn back.

Then 1 Samuel 8 introduces a new plot twist: the people ask for a king. It’s not because God has failed them, but because they want to be like other nations. It is a rejection of God’s leadership in favor of something visible and familiar. God allows it, but not without warning. He lets them choose, but makes sure they understand what that choice will cost.

All of this points us to Jesus. Where Israel wanted a king to be like everyone else, Jesus is the King unlike any other. He cannot be used or controlled, but He can be trusted completely…He reigns with perfect wisdom and love.

Challenge Question:

Write down one area where you may be tempted to rely on something visible or controllable instead of trusting God fully. Then choose one intentional step you can take this week to surrender that area to Jesus as your true King.
