Scriptures: 1 Samuel 13–16 |
Saul’s leadership begins to unravel in these chapters, not because of lack of ability, but because of lack of trust. In 1 Samuel 13, he grows impatient and takes matters into his own hands instead of waiting on God. What seems like a small adjustment reveals a deeper issue…he trusts his instincts more than God’s timing. Grace shows up in the correction that follows. God confronts Saul early, exposing the heart behind the action before it spreads further.
By 1 Samuel 15, the pattern is clear. Saul partially obeys, then justifies it. He reinterprets God’s command to fit what seems reasonable to him. But Samuel’s words cut through the excuses…obedience matters more than sacrifice. God does not allow Saul to continue in self-deception. He reveals that outward actions cannot replace inward surrender.
Then everything shifts in 1 Samuel 16. While Saul is still on the throne, God sends Samuel to anoint David, a shepherd no one expected. God makes it clear that He does not look at outward appearance, but at the heart. He raises up someone because of their willingness to surrender. Even before David steps into leadership, God is already preparing what comes next.
All of this points clearly to Jesus! Where Saul trusts himself, Jesus trusts the Father fully. Where Saul offers partial obedience, Jesus obeys completely as our true King after God’s own heart.
Challenge Question:
Write down one area where you’ve been tempted to rush, justify, or partially obey instead of fully trusting God. Then choose one specific step you can take this week to respond with complete obedience to Jesus, even if it requires patience or humility.
