Scriptures: 1 Samuel 17–20 and Psalm 59 |

1 Samuel 17 brings one of the most well-known moments in Scripture, but its depth goes beyond the battle itself. David steps onto the field not with confidence in himself, but with confidence in God’s reputation. While everyone else sees Goliath’s size, David sees an opportunity for God’s faithfulness to be revealed. Grace shows up in perspective. David’s courage is not in his ability, but in the fact that God is greater than what stands in front of him.

As the story continues through chapters 18–20, victory gives way to the next bit of drama. Saul’s jealousy grows, so David becomes a target rather than a hero. Even in success, David finds himself misunderstood, pursued, and forced to trust God in a new way. Jonathan’s friendship becomes a lifeline, reminding us that God often provides support through others in seasons of pressure. Grace appears in the Lord’s protection and provision. God does not remove David from danger immediately, but He surrounds him with what he needs to endure.

Psalm 59 connects directly to this season. David writes from a place of being hunted, but still encourages himself in God’s strength and faithfulness. Fear is real, but it does not have the final word. David learns that trust is not just for facing giants…it is for surviving what follows victory as well.

Like David, Jesus stands against what seems impossible, not for His own glory, but to reveal God’s power. He defeats the true giants of sin and death and remains faithful even when opposed. Grace reaches its fullness when victory and endurance are both secured in Christ!

Challenge Question:

Write down one “giant” you are currently facing and one “after the victory” challenge you didn’t expect…pressure, stress, or opposition. Then choose one intentional way this week to trust Jesus in both the battle and the aftermath, not just one or the other.
