Scriptures: 1 Samuel 21–24 and Psalm 91 |
The anointed future king, David, is now on the run…moving from place to place, making difficult decisions just to survive. There are moments of wisdom, but also moments of fear and desperation. David fakes insanity, hides in caves, and navigates constant danger. Grace shows up in God’s protection. Even when David’s actions are imperfect, God preserves his life and keeps His promise moving forward.
Notice David’s restraint. In 1 Samuel 24, he is given a clear opportunity to take Saul’s life and end his own suffering. Instead, he chooses to trust God’s timing rather than force his own outcome. This is a level of trust that most of us don’t have. David refuses to grasp what God has already promised him, because God’s plan does not need to be rushed to come to pass.
Psalm 91 speaks about this kind of season. It describes refuge, shelter, and protection under God’s care. It does not promise a life without danger, but it does promise God’s presence within it. Jesus, like David, is eventually pursued, misunderstood, and placed in danger, but He also never takes matters into His own hands outside the Father’s will. Where David spares Saul, Jesus willingly lays down His life. Where David trusts God’s timing, Jesus fulfills it perfectly.
Challenge Question:
Write down one situation where you feel pressure to take control, force an outcome, or rush ahead. Then list one specific way you can choose trust and restraint this week, allowing Jesus to lead instead of taking matters into your own hands.
