Scriptures: Jeremiah 17–20 |

These chapters contrast two very different ways of living. Jeremiah 17 begins by describing the person who trusts in human strength as a shrub in the desert, struggling to survive in dry ground. In contrast, the one who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted beside a river, drawing constant nourishment even through seasons of drought. Grace shows up in dependence. Lasting spiritual strength is not produced by favorable circumstances, but by remaining in relationship with God.

Look at God’s diagnosis of the human heart. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick. Who can understand it?” Left to ourselves, we are not always the best judges of our own motives or desires. Yet the very God who searches the heart is also the God who heals it. His purpose in exposing what is hidden is never to leave us in shame, but to draw us into transformation.

Jeremiah’s own life reflects this tension. He is mocked, beaten, and imprisoned because he faithfully speaks God’s message. At one point he even wishes he had never accepted his calling. But he cannot remain silent because, as he says, God’s word is “like a fire shut up in my bones.” Even in his discouragement, he continues trusting the One who called him. Grace is found in endurance. God does not promise that obedience will always be easy, but He faithfully sustains those who continue walking with Him.

Jesus is the perfectly faithful servant who trusted the Father completely, even when obedience led to rejection and suffering. He also gives us a new heart through the work of the Holy Spirit, enabling us to live with a trust that our own hearts could never produce. In Christ, we are invited to put down deep roots that can withstand every season.
