Scriptures: Jeremiah 21–24 |
These chapters make one truth unmistakably clear: God is not impressed by titles, positions, or appearances. Kings, prophets, and priests are all held accountable for how they lead His people. Again and again, Jeremiah exposes leaders who have abused their authority, spoken false hope, and scattered the very flock they were called to shepherd. Grace shows up in accountability. God cares deeply about those He entrusts with influence, and He calls them to reflect His heart rather than their own ambitions.
What stands out is the contrast between the false shepherds and the promise of a coming Shepherd. While Judah’s leaders have failed, God declares that He Himself will gather His scattered people and raise up a righteous Branch from David’s line. This future King will rule with wisdom, justice, and righteousness. In the middle of national failure, God points His people toward a better King who will never neglect His flock.
Jeremiah 24 reinforces this hope through the vision of two baskets of figs. The good figs represent people whom God will restore after exile, while the bad figs represent those who continue resisting Him. At first glance, exile looked like abandonment, but God reveals that He is using even hardship to accomplish His purposes. He promises, “I will give them a heart to know me.” God is not merely changing His people’s circumstances…He is changing their hearts.
Remember that Jesus is the righteous Branch Jeremiah foresaw, the Good Shepherd who gathers His sheep instead of scattering them. Unlike every flawed leader before Him, Jesus leads with perfect justice, compassion, and truth. Through Him, God fulfills His promise to give His people new hearts that truly know and love Him.
