Scriptures: Jeremiah 29–32 |
These chapters are written to people living in a place they never wanted to be. Jerusalem has fallen, many have been carried into exile, and the future feels uncertain. Yet instead of promising a quick escape, God tells His people to build houses, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the peace of the very city where they are living. Grace shows up in purpose. Even in seasons that feel disappointing or unwanted, God has not stopped working, and He has not stopped using His people.
What stands out is Jeremiah 29:11, one of the most familiar verses in Scripture. While it is often quoted during times of personal uncertainty, its original audience had just been told they would spend seventy years in exile. God’s promise was not that life would become easy overnight. It was that His covenant faithfulness would outlast their hardship. His plans were bigger than their present pain, and His timing was wiser than their expectations.
Then, in one of the most surprising moments in the book, God tells Jeremiah to buy a field while Jerusalem is under siege. It seems irrational. The land is about to be conquered, yet Jeremiah invests in a future he cannot yet see because God has promised restoration. His purchase becomes a living declaration that judgment will not be the end of the story. Grace is found in hope. God calls His people to trust His promises even when present circumstances seem to contradict them.
Jesus entered a broken world without taking the quickest path to glory, faithfully accomplishing the Father’s purposes even through suffering. He calls us to live with the same confidence, investing our lives in a kingdom that is coming even when we cannot yet see it fully. In Christ, our hope is anchored not in present circumstances but in the certainty of God’s promises.
Challenge Questions:
Where has God placed you right now that you have been tempted to view only as something to escape instead of somewhere He can work through you?
What “field” might God be asking you to invest in today because you trust His promises more than your circumstances?
