Scriptures: Obadiah, Psalm 82–83 |

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, but its message is weighty. It is written against Edom, a nation descended from Esau, because they stood by while Jerusalem was attacked and even took advantage of their brother’s suffering. Rather than showing compassion, they chose pride, self-interest, and indifference. God sees not only the evil we commit, but also the good we refuse to do when others are in need.

What stands out is Edom’s false sense of security. Living high in the mountains, they believed they were untouchable. Their location, wealth, and defenses convinced them they had nothing to fear. But God reminds them that no position, achievement, or advantage can replace humility before Him. Pride has a way of convincing us that we are self-sufficient, while also pulling us further from the God who sustains us.

Psalm 82 and Psalm 83 reinforce this theme by reminding us that God is the righteous Judge over all the earth. He defends the weak, sees every injustice, and will ultimately set things right. Human power is temporary, but God’s justice is eternal. For those who have been wronged, that is a source of hope. For those who hold influence, it is a call to humility and responsibility.

All of this points clearly to Jesus. He never used His position for His own advantage but humbled Himself to serve others. Where Edom rejoiced over another’s downfall, Jesus entered our suffering to rescue us from it. He is the righteous Judge who will one day make every wrong right, and the humble King who laid down His life for those who deserved judgment. In Him, justice and mercy meet perfectly.
