Scriptures: Jeremiah 41–44 |
These chapters follow the fall of Jerusalem, but the tragedy is not over. A small remnant remains in the land, and for a brief moment it seems as though they have an opportunity to begin again. Instead of seeking the Lord wholeheartedly, fear begins to inform their decisions. They ask Jeremiah to seek God’s direction, promising they will obey whatever He says. But when God’s answer is not the one they wanted, they reject it and flee to Egypt anyway. Grace shows up in invitation. God continues offering guidance and protection even after judgment, longing for His people to trust Him instead of their fears.
I
t is so easy to confuse seeking God’s will with seeking God’s approval for our own plans. The people wanted God’s blessing, but they did not want God’s direction. When His answer challenged their assumptions, they accused Jeremiah of lying rather than examining their own hearts. The greatest obstacle to obedience was an unwillingness to surrender.
Even in Egypt, where the people believed they would finally be safe, they continued clinging to the same idols that had contributed to Judah’s downfall. Changing locations did not change their hearts. The problem had never been where they lived, but whom they trusted. God desires more than outward change; He calls His people to hearts that are willing to follow Him wherever He leads.
All of this points clearly to Jesus. He never sought the Father’s approval for His own agenda but continually surrendered to the Father’s will, even when it led to the cross. Through Christ, we are not only shown what wholehearted obedience looks like, but we are also given the Holy Spirit to help us live it. Jesus invites us to trust Him enough to follow His voice, even when it leads somewhere we would not have chosen ourselves.
Challenge Questions:
When was the last time you asked God for direction but secretly hoped He would confirm a decision you had already made?
Are there fears that have been shaping your decisions more than your trust in Jesus?
