Scriptures: Ezekiel 1–4 |
Ezekiel begins in the most unlikely place…not in Jerusalem or at the temple, but in exile beside the Kebar River. It would have been easy for God’s people to assume that because they were far from home, they were also far from God. Then Ezekiel receives an overwhelming vision of God’s glory, reminding him that the Lord is not confined to a city, a temple, or a nation. Grace shows up in presence. Even in exile, God comes to His people and reveals that He has not abandoned them.
What stands out is Ezekiel’s calling. God repeatedly addresses him as “son of man” and commissions him to speak whether the people listen or refuse to listen. Success is not measured by the response of the audience but by the faithfulness of the messenger. Ezekiel is even asked to act out God’s message through symbolic actions, showing that his entire life would become part of his calling.
These opening chapters remind us that obedience is often costly. Ezekiel is called to stand apart, speak difficult truths, and faithfully represent God in a culture that has grown resistant to His voice. But throughout it all, God’s glory remains at the center. The same God who called Ezekiel would also sustain him. Grace is found in calling. God never sends His people where His presence will not also go.
All of this points clearly to Jesus. He is the perfect Son who faithfully revealed the Father, regardless of whether people accepted or rejected Him. Like Ezekiel, He proclaimed God’s truth through both His words and His life. Unlike Ezekiel, He not only announced God’s message but became the living Word. Through Christ, we are reminded that God’s presence is not limited by our circumstances, and His calling is sustained by His grace.
Challenge Questions:
Where have you been tempted to believe that your current circumstances limit God’s ability to work in your life?
If faithfulness is measured by obedience rather than visible results, how might that change the way you approach the opportunities God has given you?
