Scriptures: Ezekiel 5–8 |

These chapters contain some of the most sobering visions in Scripture. Through vivid symbols and a heartbreaking vision of the temple, God reveals the depth of Judah’s rebellion. The people had not merely drifted from Him in private…they had brought idolatry into the very place that was meant to reflect His holiness. What was intended to be a place of worship had become a place of compromise. Grace once again shows up in exposure. God lovingly uncovers what has been hidden because healing cannot begin until the truth is brought into the light.

What stands out is that God sees what no one else can. Ezekiel is shown the secret rooms, hidden idols, and private acts of worship that others could not see. The people believed their sin was concealed, even saying, “The Lord does not see us.” But nothing escapes His notice. This is not meant to create fear as much as honesty. The God who sees everything is the same God who continually calls His people back to Himself.

These chapters also remind us that outward religion cannot substitute for wholehearted devotion. The temple still stood, sacrifices were still being offered, but hearts had become divided. God has always desired more than external obedience. He desires people whose worship flows from genuine love and faithfulness. Grace is found in wholeheartedness. God does not settle for a divided heart because He knows we were created to find life in Him alone.

All of this points clearly to Jesus. He later cleansed the temple, confronting the same disconnect between outward worship and inward devotion. But He also became the true temple, making God’s presence available through Himself. Through Christ, God is not simply interested in cleaning up our outward actions. He is transforming our hearts into places where His Spirit delights to dwell.
