Scriptures: Isaiah 38–39, 2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32:24–33 |
These chapters move from miraculous deliverance to a much more personal test. Hezekiah becomes gravely ill, and Isaiah tells him to prepare for death. In response, Hezekiah pours out his heart before God, and God graciously extends his life by fifteen years! God hears the prayers of His people and responds with compassion, even in moments that seem final.
What stands out, however, is what happens after the miracle. Hezekiah receives an extraordinary blessing, but pride quietly begins to grow. When Babylonian envoys arrive, he eagerly shows them all the treasures of his kingdom rather than directing attention to God. The same king who trusted God so much during the Assyrian crisis struggles when success and blessing enter the picture. Sometimes prosperity can test the heart as much as adversity.
2 Chronicles adds an important observation: “God withdrew from Hezekiah in order to test him and to see what was really in his heart.” The test was not designed to destroy him, but to reveal what was already there. God allows our hearts to be revealed so that pride can be addressed before it takes deeper root.
These chapters remind us that faithfulness is needed not only during hardship but also during seasons of blessing. It is often easier to depend on God when we feel desperate than when we feel successful. Grace continues calling us back to humility in every season.
Where Hezekiah struggled with pride after blessing, Jesus remained humble despite possessing all authority and glory. Where human hearts are inconsistent, Christ is perfectly faithful. Grace reaches its fullness when our confidence rests not in our own achievements, blessings, or reputation, but in Jesus, who remained humble and obedient to the Father in every circumstance.
Challenge Question:
Write down one blessing, success, or area of strength in your life that could tempt you toward self-reliance or pride. Then spend time this week intentionally thanking Jesus for that gift and asking Him to keep your heart humble, grateful, and dependent on Him.
