Scriptures: Jonah 1–4 |

Jonah is a story about much more than a "big fish”. It’s a story about a reluctant prophet, a compassionate God, and a heart that struggles to get in
line with God’s mercy. When God calls Jonah to go to Nineveh, he runs in the opposite direction. He would rather flee than see his enemies receive grace. But, even in Jonah’s rebellion, God pursues him through storms, sailors, and yes…a great fish. Grace shows up in God’s pursuit. God does not give up on Jonah when he runs…He keeps moving toward him!

Jonah eventually does obey outwardly, but his heart remains resistant inwardly. Nineveh repents, God relents from judgment, and Jonah becomes angry. The very mercy he once needed for himself is the mercy he struggles to extend to others. God cares not only about His prophet, but also about a city full of broken people who do not know Him.

The final chapter leaves the story unresolved. God asks Jonah a
question about compassion, and the book ends without giving Jonah’s answer. But this is intentional, because it’s as though the question is handed directly to the reader. God consistently challenges us to examine whether or not our hearts truly reflect His, especially toward people we find difficult to love, forgive, or understand.

Where Jonah ran from his mission, Jesus embraced His completely. Where Jonah resented God’s mercy toward others, Jesus extended mercy even to those who rejected Him. Grace reaches its fullness when we see that God’s compassion is bigger than our preferences, our boundaries, and even our understanding.

Challenge Question:
Write down one person, group, or type of person you find difficult to show grace toward. Then list three ways God has shown mercy to you that you did not deserve. Ask Jesus this week to help your heart reflect His compassion more fully toward others!
