Scriptures: Exodus 1–4 |

Exodus opens with a painful shift from when we were in Genesis. God’s people are no longer guests in Egypt, but slaves. Fear drives oppression, and power is used to crush them. But even under brutal conditions, the people multiply. We see that God’s promise to Abraham is still alive, even when circumstances of the moment could suggest otherwise. Grace shows up here because God is growing His people even when they are being pressed down.

God’s rescue often begins in unexpected ways! He works through courageous women, a hidden baby, and a reluctant leader. Moses grows up caught between two worlds, and he is marked by both privilege and pain. When God finally speaks to him from the burning bush, Moses initially resists, doubts, and lists all of his (known) inadequacies. God does not choose Moses because he is confident or capable, but because He is willing to be present. “I will be with you” becomes the center of the calling. Grace is not the removal of weakness, but God’s commitment to walk with His people through it. Your “yes” to God is all He is ever seeking.

God also reveals His name...I AM! He is constant, self-existent, and faithful to His covenant. Grace moves from promise to action. God is not only aware of injustice...He steps into history to confront it. This points us directly to Jesus. Just as God sent Moses to confront oppression and lead His people out of bondage, God later sends His Son to confront sin and lead humanity into freedom. Jesus is the ultimate “I AM,” God present with His people.

Challenge Question:
Where is God inviting you to trust His ability rather than your own ability, and does seeing Jesus as the ultimate Deliverer change the way you respond to fear, calling, or resistance in your life?
