Scriptures: 2 Kings 16–17, 2 Chronicles 28 |
These chapters record one of the most tragic turning points in Israel’s history. After generations of warnings from prophets, opportunities to repent, and repeated displays of God’s patience, the northern kingdom of Israel falls to Assyria and is carried into exile. The biblical writers are careful to explain why this happened…and it was not because God had abandoned His people. This is simply a consequence because His people continually abandoned Him. Grace still shows up in patience, though. For centuries, God warned, called, corrected, and invited them to return before judgment
finally came.
You’ll notice the repeated phrase that the people followed the practices of the surrounding nations rather than remaining faithful to God. Gradually, they adopted values, priorities, and forms of worship that pulled them further from Him. Spiritual drifting from God did not happen overnight…it developed through countless small compromises over time. God continually sent prophets because He desired repentance, not destruction.
In these dark chapters, however, God’s faithfulness remains visible. The exile is not the end of the story. His covenant purposes continue, and His promises remain intact despite human failure. Human rebellion may delay blessing, but it cannot cancel God’s redemptive plan.
Jesus is the faithful Son who succeeds where Israel failed, remaining obedient to the Father completely. Where generations wandered from God, Jesus walks perfectly with Him.
Challenge Question:
Write down one small compromise, habit, or influence that could slowly be pulling your heart away from God. Then identify one practical step you can take this week to strengthen your devotion to Jesus before drift has the chance to grow deeper.
