Scriptures: Isaiah 18-22 |
These chapters continue Isaiah’s prophecies concerning the nations, but a deeper theme begins to emerge. Again and again, people respond to danger, uncertainty, and crisis by placing their trust in political alliances, military preparations, or human wisdom. Whether the threat comes from powerful empires or looming invasion, the instinct is the same: solve the problem without truly seeking God. Even when people look everywhere else for security, God continues calling them back to trust in Him.
Let’s look specifically at Isaiah 22. Jerusalem faces a serious threat, and the people work feverishly to strengthen defenses, store water, and prepare for battle. None of those actions were wrong in themselves, yet Isaiah identifies the deeper issue: “You never asked for help from the One who did all this. You never considered the One who planned this long ago.” The problem was not preparation…it was dependence. Grace appears in redirection! God reminds His people that wisdom and planning are valuable, but they are never substitutes for trusting Him.
Throughout these chapters, human strength is repeatedly exposed as limited. Nations rise and fall, alliances fail, and carefully crafted plans prove insufficient…but God’s purposes remain steady through every change. While circumstances shift constantly, God remains the one reliable foundation beneath it all.
All of this points clearly to Jesus. He is the foundation that cannot be shaken and the King whose wisdom never fails. Where people often trust their own plans more than God’s presence, Jesus invites us into a life of dependence on the Father.
Challenge Question:
Write down one situation you are trying hard to manage, solve, or control right now. Then honestly ask yourself whether you have been relying more on your own efforts or on God’s guidance. This week, choose one way to seek Jesus first in that situation through prayer, surrender, or trust.
