Scriptures: Isaiah 36–37, 2 Kings 18:9–37, 2 Chronicles 32:1–23, Psalm 76 |
These chapters place Hezekiah and Judah in what appears to be an impossible situation. The Assyrian Empire has conquered nation after nation, and now Jerusalem stands in its path. The enemy’s message is terrifying: God cannot save you, resistance is pointless, and surrender is your only option. The voices of fear, intimidation, and doubt grow louder with every threat. Grace shows up in trust! When everything visible points toward defeat, God tells His people to believe Him anyway.
What stands out is Hezekiah’s response. He does not pretend the danger is not real. He takes the threatening letter into the temple, spreads it out before the Lord, and prays. Rather than carrying the burden alone, he places it before God. Faith is not denying reality…it is bringing reality into the presence of the One who is greater than it.
God’s answer is dramatic, because without Judah firing a shot, the Assyrian threat collapses. The nation that seemed unstoppable is stopped by God alone. Psalm 76 celebrates this truth: God is greater than the most powerful armies and rulers on earth. Sometimes God works through our efforts, and sometimes He reminds us that the battle belongs to Him.
Jesus, too, faced overwhelming opposition, but trusted the Father completely. He conquered an enemy far greater than Assyria…sin and death itself.
Challenge Question:
Write down one situation that feels overwhelming, intimidating, or beyond your ability to handle. Then take a few moments this week to do what Hezekiah did: place it before the Lord in prayer and intentionally surrender the outcome to Him, trusting that He is greater than whatever stands against you.
