Scriptures: Song of Songs 1:1–5:1 |

These chapters introduce a different kind of language…poetry filled with romantic longing, delight, pursuit, and joy. The relationship between the bride and the bridegroom is expressive, affectionate, and (as I’m sure you’ve noticed)
personal. There is admiration, desire, and celebration of one another. Grace shows up when we delight in what God has given us! Love here is not distant…it is meant to be enjoyed, pursued, and expressed.

One of the beautiful things worth noting here is the mutual nature of the relationship. There is giving and receiving, seeking and responding. The bride longs for the presence of the bridegroom, and the bridegroom speaks identity
and beauty over her. Love is not one-sided…it is interactive. Grace appears in true intimacy. There is a closeness that goes beyond duty…this is connection, affection, and being fully seen and valued.

There is also a sense of timing woven throughout…“Do not arouse or awaken love until the time is right.” Love is powerful, and it is meant to grow in the right context. Grace is found in wisdom. God does not only design love…He guides how it is nurtured and protected.

All of this points clearly to Jesus. Throughout Scripture, the relationship between God and His people is often described in relational, even covenantal love. Jesus is the bridegroom who pursues, delights in, and speaks identity over His people.

Challenge Question:
Write down one way you’ve experienced God’s love personally, and one area where you may have been relating to Him more out of duty than closeness. Then make sure in your next prayer to respond to Jesus with affection and gratitude, not just obligation.
