Scriptures: 2 Samuel 16–18 |
These chapters walk through one of the most painful seasons of David’s life. As he flees from his own son, Absalom, he faces humiliation, betrayal, and uncertainty from every direction. Some curse him, some manipulate him, and others remain loyal. The problems are constant…who can be trusted, what will happen next, and how will this end? Grace shows up in endurance. David keeps moving forward only because he continues to entrust himself to God in the middle of confusion.
Look at how David carries himself! When cursed, he does not
immediately retaliate. When faced with opportunity to control outcomes, he resists forcing things. Even when the battle turns in his favor, his heart is not fixed on victory…it is fixed on his son. Chapter 18 ends not with celebration, but with grief. “My son Absalom…if only I had died instead of you.” David is a king, but also a father, carrying both authority and heavy personal pain.
This moment reveals something profound…unfortunately, victory in circumstances does not always mean peace in the heart. David gains the kingdom back, but loses his son. Life is not as simple as win or lose. Grace can always be found in God’s presence through both. He remains near in the confusion, the grief, and the complexity that cannot be easily resolved.
Jesus walks through betrayal, rejection, and suffering, but responds with patience, compassion, and surrender to the Father. Where David grieves the loss of his son, Jesus becomes the Son who is given for us. Grace reaches its fullness when even the most painful moments are met by Christ, who understands both loss and redemption.
Challenge Question:
Write down one situation in your life that feels complicated or
unresolved…where there is both good and pain mixed together. Then choose one intentional way this week to bring that honestly to Jesus, trusting Him to be present with you even when the outcome is not simple.
