Scriptures: Genesis 17–19 |

Genesis 17 is where God puts a name on His promise. Abram becomes Abraham, Sarai becomes Sarah, and God formalizes a covenant that has always been driven by His grace. The promise of a son is reaffirmed when it still seems humanly impossible. Circumcision  is introduced and it becomes a sign of belonging. God is marking a people for Himself, making it clear that the future He promised depends on His power and promises.

Genesis 18 and 19 place that promise beside a depressing picture of human corruption. God listens to Abraham’s intercession for Sodom, which shows His patience and His willingness to spare many for the sake of a few. Grace is again seen in God’s restraint and His openness to being merciful. Eventually judgment does come after warning, delay, and a rescue. Lot and his family are pulled out of danger before destruction falls. Even in judgment, God makes a way of escape.

God is both faithful to His promises and serious about sin. He is compassionate toward those who cry out to Him and decisive when evil becomes immovable. Grace does not deny justice, and justice does not cancel grace.

Challenge Question:

How do these chapters challenge the way you think about God’s patience, justice, and grace, and where might He be calling you to trust Him more deeply when those qualities feel hard to hold together?
