Scriptures: Genesis 38–40 |

Genesis 38 feels like an interruption in the story, and in many ways, it is. Judah’s choices lead to deception, injustice, and deep moral failure. The chapter is uncomfortable because it refuses to hide the messiness of the family God has chosen. But grace is present even here. God does not abandon the line through which the promise will come. Instead of erasing Judah’s story, God redeems it over time. Grace does not bypass broken chapters…it works through them.

Genesis 39 returns us to Joseph, now in Egypt, where faithfulness seems to lead only to loss. Joseph does what is right and is punished for it. Still, one phrase repeats like a quiet chorus…“the Lord was with Joseph.” God’s presence does not prevent suffering, but it does sustain purpose within it. Grace sometimes shows up as companionship in isolation and favor in forgotten places.

Genesis 40 shows us that Joseph helps others, interprets dreams, and is promptly forgotten. Have you ever felt this way before? Waiting stretches longer than expected, but God is positioning Joseph exactly where he needs to be. What feels like delay is actually more preparation. Grace is a lot of things, but it’s not always immediate relief.

I am so grateful that Jesus steps fully into broken family lines, unjust suffering, and forgotten spaces. Like Joseph, He remains faithful when obedience costs Him everything. And like Judah’s story, He redeems what looks beyond repair. God is still writing the story.

Challenge Question:

Where could God be at work in parts of your story that feel like interruptions or delays, and how does seeing His steady presence here help you trust His grace when progress feels slow?
