Scriptures: Job 1–5 |

Welcome to the Book of Job, the happiest place on earth! Job opens with a reality that unsettles us when we see it even today…a righteous man suffers heavily without explanation. Loss comes suddenly, and none of the usual formulas apply. What should stand out is not why Job suffers, but that God does not withdraw from him. Job’s world collapses, but his relationship with God remains intact. Sometimes grace shows up as God’s consistent presence in the middle of our pain and loss.

As the conversations begin, Job’s grief is honest and unfiltered. It’s raw and he does not pretend, minimize, or rush toward tidy answers. His friends try to help, but they mistake explanation for comfort. We do this too, don’t we? They search for causes instead of sitting with someone in their sorrow. Grace reminds us that faith does not require certainty, and that suffering is not always something to be solved. Sometimes faith simply just stays engaged with God when everything else feels lost.

Remember our Lord, Jesus, who is the innocent sufferer who is misunderstood, blamed, and surrounded by well-meaning voices that miss the heart of God. On the cross, Jesus does not offer an explanation for pain…instead, He offers Himself. Grace does not eliminate suffering. It just assures us that God is present, listening, and near, even when answers do not come.

Challenge Question:

When life feels unfair or unexplained, do you find yourself searching for answers or bringing your pain honestly to God? Could Job’s story challenge you to stay present with God instead of rushing toward resolution?
