Scriptures: 1 Kings 12, 2 Chronicles 10 |
These chapters mark a heartbreaking turning point…the kingdom divides. Rehoboam has the opportunity to lead with humility and compassion, but instead chooses harshness and pride. He rejects wise counsel and listens to voices that feed his ego rather than challenge it. What could have been healed becomes fully broken. Leadership without humility eventually damages both the leader and the people around them.
Look at how much influence counsel has over our direction! Rehoboam listens, but not to the right voices. Wisdom was available to him, yet he chose what felt powerful instead of what was truly wise. Grace always appears in discernment. Not every voice speaking confidently is leading toward life. Who we listen to influences where we end up.
The division of the kingdom also shows how quickly pride and fear can change a future. Jeroboam responds with insecurity, building counterfeit systems of worship to maintain control. Instead of trusting God, he creates substitutes that feel safer and easier to manage. Here, grace is found in exposure. God reveals how human fear often leads people to replace true worship with more controllable alternatives.
All of this points clearly to Jesus. He is the humble King who listens perfectly to the Father and leads without arrogance or insecurity. Where human leadership fractures and divides, Jesus restores and unites. We experience this best when our trust is no longer placed in human strength or control, but in Christ.
Challenge Question:
Write down one voice, influence, or fear that may be influencing your decisions more than God’s wisdom right now. Then choose one way this week to seek the Lord’s direction first, even if it requires humility, patience, or surrender instead of control.
