Scriptures: 1 Kings 15:25–16:34, 2 Chronicles 17 |

These chapters place two very different paths side by side. In Israel, kings rise and fall quickly through violence, corruption, and idolatry. The pattern repeats again and again…leaders reject God, people drift further into sin, and instability spreads throughout the kingdom. By the time Ahab appears, compromise has become the normal method, unfortunately. Scripture does not hide the destruction caused by rejecting God…it reveals it clearly so people can see where those paths lead.

Then 2 Chronicles 17 shifts the focus to Jehoshaphat in Judah. Unlike many surrounding leaders, he seeks the Lord and removes places of false worship. He sends teachers throughout the land so people can understand God’s law and walk in wisdom. Grace appears in leadership. Godly leadership does not merely control people…it helps direct hearts back toward truth and faithfulness.

What stands out is how much influence leadership and environment carry. Repeated compromise changes a culture over time, but so does intentional devotion. The direction people choose consistently becomes the future they experience collectively. Grace is found in guidance. God continually raises up voices, leaders, and opportunities that point people back toward life and truth.

All of this points clearly to Jesus. He is the perfectly righteous King who leads people not into corruption, but into truth, life, and restoration. Where earthly kingdoms become unstable through sin, Jesus establishes a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Challenge Question:

Write down one influence, environment, or pattern that may be shaping your heart away from God right now, and one influence that helps draw you closer to Him. Then choose one step this week to strengthen the voices and habits that lead you toward Jesus and weaken the ones that pull you away.
