Scriptures: 2 Kings 12–13, 2 Chronicles 24 |

These chapters begin with hope. Joash starts his reign by restoring the temple and leading the people toward renewal. Under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest, there is worship, order, and devotion to God again. God allows broken things to be rebuilt and gives people opportunities to return to what matters most.

What stands out, though, is how quickly direction changes once Jehoiada dies. Joash eventually drifts as well, listens to unhealthy counsel, and eventually turns against the very people who helped lead him toward God. The same king who once repaired the temple now rejects correction and allows compromise back into the nation. Grace appears in warning again. External reform is not enough if the heart is not continually surrendered to God.

In 2 Kings 13, Israel continues struggling under unfaithful leadership, yet God still shows mercy because of His covenant. Even in seasons of decline, He does not completely abandon His people. Grace is found in God’s patience. Human faithfulness may rise and fall, but God continues extending mercy and opportunities to return.

There is something sad to note in today’s reading…spiritual momentum borrowed from others is not enough to sustain a life. Joash thrived while someone else’s faith guided him, but drifted when that influence disappeared. Grace calls people into personal devotion, not just inherited or borrowed faith.

All of this points clearly to Jesus. He is the faithful leader who never drifts, never rejects truth, and never abandons His devotion to the Father. Where human leaders fail over time, Jesus remains steadfast forever.

Challenge Question:

Write down one area where your faith may be relying more on routine, environment, or other people instead of personal devotion to God. Then choose one way this week that you can strengthen your own connection with Jesus in a deeper and more personal way.
