Scriptures: Deuteronomy 31–34 |
Moses knows his time is ending, and leadership is being handed to Joshua. God speaks directly into the uncertainty, reminding His people that His presence is not tied to one leader. “Be strong and courageous” is repeated as an assurance. Grace shows up in God’s continuity. He remains faithful across generations and His promises do not expire when a season ends or a leader steps aside.
As Moses blesses the tribes and prepares for his death, the weight of the moment settles in. Moses has been faithful for so long, but he still will not enter the land due to a costly mistake he made while in the wilderness. Still, God allows him to see it…which is both sobering and tender. Grace does not always look like receiving everything we hoped for, but it does look like being fully seen, fully known, and fully loved by God. So it’s important to remember that the story of Moses ends not in failure, but in faithfulness.
Deuteronomy itself ends with God Himself burying Moses with no monument, no shrine…just honor. God’s work has never depended on one person alone. This theme of courage and faithful transition fits well on St. Patrick’s Day. Like Moses, Patrick stepped forward into uncertainty, trusting God’s provision rather than his own strength. His life reminds us that obedience in one generation can shape the faith in countless others, and that God often uses willing servants to carry His mission into new places and new seasons.
Moses was a faithful servant, but Jesus is the greater deliverer. Where Moses led people to the edge of the promise, Jesus leads us fully into it!
