Scriptures: Numbers 17–20 |
In Numbers 17 we see that God causes Aaron’s staff to bud, blossom, and produce fruit overnight! You can clearly see here that authority is not seized or argued for…it is given and made evident by God Himself. God removes confusion and conflict by making His choice unmistakable. Leadership is not validated by noise or popularity, but rather by God’s life-giving power.
Numbers 18 and 19 then address responsibility and cleansing. God establishes roles for the priests and Levites, not meant as a burden, but as protection for the community. He also provides a way for cleansing after contact with death, acknowledging the reality of loss in a broken world. But Numbers 20 brings the weight back in, and Miriam dies. The people complain again. Moses, worn down and angry, strikes the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded…and water still flows, but the cost is high. Moses is told he will not enter the Promised Land. This moment is heartbreaking! Even faithful leaders are not above consequences. Yet the promise continues, even when individuals stumble along the way.
Later in the scriptures, Paul tells us that Christ is the Rock, and unlike Moses, Jesus is never disobedient OR reactive. He is struck once, and from Him flows living water for all who thirst. Where Moses failed under pressure, Jesus remains faithful. Grace is not that leaders never fall…it is that our hope is not ultimately in them, but in Christ who never fails.
