Scriptures: Joshua 7–10 |
Joshua 7 opens with a hard reminder that victory does not remove the need for obedience. After Jericho, Israel assumes success will continue easily, but hidden sin brings unexpected defeat. God exposes what is buried in order to restore integrity. Grace shows up in the Lord’s correction. God confronts what threatens the community so healing and forward movement can continue. Restoration begins when truth is brought into the light.
Joshua 8 shows what grace makes possible after repentance. God invites Israel back into battle, reassures Joshua, and gives clear direction. Victory follows humility. The people learn that success flows from dependence, not confidence. Then in Joshua 9, deception enters the story through the Gibeonites. Israel fails to seek God’s counsel and makes a costly agreement. Even so, God weaves mercy into the mistake because, while grace does not erase consequences, it does redeem missteps and keep the mission moving.
As Israel fights to protect the Gibeonites in Joshua 10, God intervenes. The sun literally stands still, and victory is secured! What began with failure and deception ends with God fighting for His people again. Grace is unmistakable as God remains faithful to His purposes even when His people stumble along the way.
I love that Jesus exposes sin not to condemn us, but to heal us. He covers our failures with mercy and continues leading us forward. Where Israel learned that victory depends on obedience and trust, Jesus fulfills that obedience perfectly on our behalf.
