Scriptures: Numbers 21–24 |

Numbers 21 reminds us how easily (and often) discouragement turns inward. The people grow impatient and speak against God, so the consequences are severe. Even here, though, grace interrupts. God provides healing through the bronze serpent, lifted up so that those who look in faith may live. Grace does not deny the seriousness of sin, but it does offer a way back. God responds to repentance with restoration!

Numbers 22–24 take an unexpected turn through the story of Balaam. He is some sort of prophet hired to curse God’s people, but finds himself unable to do so. Again and again, blessing replaces intended harm. God’s purposes cannot be overturned by manipulation, fear, or human schemes! Grace shows up here as protection. Even when God’s people are unaware of the danger, God is actively guarding them. I find so much comfort in this thought.

What stands out is God’s sovereignty over every voice that speaks. Balaam’s donkey sees what Balaam does not! God is actively involved, working behind the scenes to preserve His people and His plan. Just as the bronze serpent was lifted up so people could look and live, Jesus is lifted up on the cross so all who look to Him in faith may be healed. Where Balaam’s curses are turned into blessing, Jesus absorbs the curse of sin and replaces it with life. Grace reaches its fullness when what was meant to destroy becomes the very means of salvation through Christ!

Challenge Question:

Make a short list of voices, fears, or situations that have been guiding your thinking lately. Then choose one of those and intentionally replace it this week by fixing your attention on Jesus through prayer, Scripture, or worship, trusting Him to turn fear into blessing.
