Scriptures: Judges 19–21 |

Judges 19–21 is one of the darkest sections in all of Scripture. Violence, abuse, revenge, and chaos unfold in horrifying ways. It is difficult to read…but it is meant to be. The repeated phrase echoes again…“everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” What happens when God’s authority is abandoned is not subtle…it’s destructive. Grace here shows up in exposure. God allows the consequences of moral collapse to be seen clearly so no one can pretend that self-made morality leads anywhere good.

The civil war that follows reveals how broken the nation has become. Sin multiplies, vengeance escalates, and desperation leads to more reckless decisions. Even attempts at correction are flawed. The book of Judges ends not with resolution, but with unrest. It leaves the reader unsettled on purpose. When people govern themselves apart from God’s leadership, even good intentions unravel. Grace is found in the honesty of the ending…the scriptures do not sanitize history.

Even in this darkness, hope is forming. The story does not end here. Judges prepares the reader for something more…for a faithful King. The chaos cries out for righteous leadership. The longing for stability points beyond human judges to something greater! That brings us unmistakably to Jesus. Where Israel spirals into moral confusion, Jesus stands as the true and righteous King. Where everyone does what is right in their own eyes, Jesus perfectly does what is right in the Father’s eyes.

Challenge Question:

Write down one area in your life or culture where you see confusion between what feels right and what is right. Then identify one specific way you can submit that area to God this week, trusting Him as your true King rather than relying on personal preference.
