Scriptures: Matthew 12:22–50, Mark 3:22–35, Luke 8:19–21, 11:14–54 |
Jesus performs an unmistakable miracle by freeing a demon-possessed man who had been blind and unable to speak. The crowds begin wondering whether Jesus could really be the Messiah! But the religious leaders see the same evidence and claim His power comes from Satan. Jesus exposes just how twisted that accusation is: a kingdom divided against itself cannot survive. Their problem is not a lack of evidence…their hearts have become so resistant that they reinterpret what God is doing rather than reconsider what they believe.
That resistance leads into a warning from Jesus about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. In context, this is not someone accidentally saying the wrong words or struggling with doubt. These leaders are witnessing the Spirit’s work through Jesus and are deliberately calling it evil. Grace is found in the warning itself. Jesus exposes the danger of a heart that becomes so committed to resisting God that it can look directly at His work and refuse to recognize Him.
Jesus then confronts religious hypocrisy even more directly. The Pharisees carefully maintain outward appearances while neglecting justice, generosity, and the condition of their hearts. Jesus is not impressed by spirituality that looks polished publicly while remaining unchanged internally. He says that a tree is identified by its fruit because eventually what fills the heart becomes visible through our words and actions.
Even Jesus’ definition of family reinforces the same point. When told that His mother and brothers are waiting for Him, He says His true family consists of those who do God's will. Following Jesus is more than DNA, familiarity, or religious knowledge. The question is whether His truth is actually reaching our hearts deeply enough to change how we live.
Challenge Questions:
When God's truth challenges something you already believe or prefer, are you willing to reconsider your position or do you instinctively defend it?
What does the current “fruit” of your words and actions reveal about what has been filling your heart?
