Scriptures: Matthew 8:18–34, 9:18–38, Mark 4:35–5:43, Luke 8:22–56, 9:57–62 |

These passages move rapidly from one impossible situation to another. A violent storm threatens to sink the boat that the disciples are on, a man is controlled by a legion of demons, a woman has suffered with bleeding for twelve years, and a young girl dies before Jesus even reaches her! Each situation represents something beyond human control, but none of them is beyond the authority of Jesus. Wind, waves, demons, disease, and even death respond to His voice.

The disciples wake Jesus during the storm asking, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” They have Jesus in the boat and still believe the storm may have the final word. Later, the woman in the crowd reaches for His robe believing that even touching Him could change everything. Grace is found in the fact that Jesus responds to imperfect people reaching toward Him with whatever faith they have. It’s not popular to preach, but fear and faith sometimes exist in the same heart.

Then Jesus arrives at the home of Jairus after everyone believes the story is already over. The mourners are gathering, the girl has died, and there appears to be nothing left to do. Jesus takes her hand and brings her back to life. The delay that must have felt unbearable to Jairus had still not placed his daughter beyond Jesus’ reach. What looks final to us is not necessarily final to Him.

These miracles are surrounded by Jesus’ challenging words…and they are all about one thing: following Him! Discipleship cannot simply mean wanting Jesus nearby when storms come. Following Him means trusting His authority enough to go wherever He leads, even when the road is uncomfortable or costly. The One asking us to follow is the same One who commands storms, breaks chains, heals wounds, and raises the dead.

Challenge Questions:

What situation in your life currently feels beyond your control?

Are you primarily looking for Jesus to make your life safer and easier, or are you willing to follow Him even when obedience becomes uncomfortable?
