Scriptures: Matthew 15, Mark 7:1–8:10 |
The religious leaders confront Jesus because His disciples do not follow their traditional hand-washing rituals. Not the hand-washing! Jesus turns the conversation toward something much deeper. They have become so devoted to religious traditions that they sometimes use them to avoid what God actually commanded! Jesus explains that uncleanness does not begin with what touches us from the outside…it comes from the heart. Grace is found in Jesus exposing the real problem so He can deal with something deeper than appearances.
Then Jesus travels into Gentile territory, where a desperate woman begs Him to free her daughter from a demon. The conversation initially sounds startling, but she refuses to walk away because she believes even the crumbs from Jesus are enough…and Jesus praises her faith and heals her daughter! Someone the religious world might have considered an outsider demonstrates the kind of persistent trust Jesus has been looking for.
Mark continues with Jesus healing a man who cannot hear or speak clearly. Jesus takes him away from the crowd and deals with him personally. Soon afterward, another enormous crowd gathers without food. Once again Jesus refuses to send hungry people away, and once again a small amount of food becomes enough in His hands. His compassion crosses boundaries of ethnicity, reputation, physical ability, and need.
These stories challenge our tendency to focus on outward religion while overlooking the condition of our hearts and the people standing in front of us. Jesus consistently moves toward those others might dismiss while confronting those who believe religious familiarity makes them spiritually healthy. Following Him means allowing Him to transform both what is inside us and how we see the people around us.
Challenge Questions:
Are there religious habits or traditions you protect more carefully than the heart behind them?
Who are you tempted to see as an outsider that Jesus may be asking you to view with His compassion?
