Scriptures: Matthew 3, Mark 1:1–11, Luke 3, John 1:15–34 |
After years of silence, John the Baptist appears in the wilderness with a simple message: “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” Crowds come to hear him, confess their sins, and be baptized! But John refuses to let repentance remain merely emotional or religious. When people ask what they should do, he points toward generosity, honesty, and integrity. Real repentance always changes our direction.
John continually redirects attention away from himself. He knows he is preparing the road for Someone greater. When Jesus finally approaches, John publicly declares, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” The answer to humanity's sin is not simply trying harder after repentance…the Lamb has come to take our sin away completely!
Jesus steps into the Jordan to be baptized and He has no sin to confess, but He still identifies Himself with the people He came to save. The Holy Spirit descends upon Him, and the Father declares His love and approval. Before Jesus performs a miracle, preaches a sermon, or begins His public ministry, His identity is established in the Father's love. We could learn from that.
This feels like the starting gun after centuries of waiting. John prepares the way, the Father identifies His Son, the Spirit rests upon Him, and Jesus steps forward to begin the mission that will lead ultimately to the cross.
Challenge Questions:
Is there an area where your repentance has remained mostly words or feelings rather than producing an actual change of direction?
How would your life change if you lived from the security of being loved by God rather than constantly trying to prove your worth?
