Scriptures: Haggai 1–2 |
Haggai speaks to people who have returned from exile and begun rebuilding their lives. They have homes again, routines again, and a sense of normalcy again, but the temple remains unfinished. Their problem is not that they have abandoned God completely. They have simply allowed other priorities to become more urgent than Him…and His temple remains unfinished. Grace shows up in interruption. Sometimes God disrupts our comfort because we have slowly learned to live comfortably with things that should concern us.
Twice in the opening chapter God tells the people, “Look at what’s happening to you!” They are working hard but never satisfied, earning money that seems to disappear and constantly pursuing more without finding contentment. Haggai invites them to examine whether the frustration they feel around them might reveal something disordered within them. The answer is not simply to work harder. It is to put God back where He belongs.
When the rebuilding begins, another struggle appears. Some remember Solomon’s magnificent temple and cannot help comparing the new structure with what existed before. Then He tells them to be strong and keep working because He is with them. What God is doing now does not have to look like what He did before to carry His blessing. Comparison can make us overlook something beautiful simply because it is different.
Haggai promises that God will once again fill His house with glory, but the greater fulfillment comes when Jesus enters the temple Himself. God’s greatest glory is not ultimately found in a building but in Christ, who comes to dwell among His people. Jesus invites us to build our lives around His presence rather than asking Him to fit somewhere among everything else we are building.
Challenge Questions:
Is there something spiritually important that you keep postponing because other things always seem more urgent?
Where has comparison with a previous season made it difficult to recognize what God may be doing now?
