Scriptures: Ezekiel 37–40 |
Ezekiel 37 opens with one of Scripture’s most unforgettable visions. God places Ezekiel in a valley filled with dry bones and asks him, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?” Humanly speaking, the answer is obvious…these bones are not merely dying; they are long dead and completely dry. But Ezekiel wisely answers, “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know the answer to that.” Then God breathes life into what appeared completely beyond recovery. Grace shows up in possibility. What looks finished from our perspective is not necessarily finished in the hands of God.
The vision speaks directly to Israel’s hopelessness. God does not deny the reality of their condition. Instead, He reveals that their condition does not limit His power. He promises to restore them, reunite His divided people, and place His Spirit within them. The question is no longer whether the bones can revive themselves. The question is whether God can bring life where life no longer exists.
Chapters 38–39 widen the picture as hostile forces rise against God’s restored people. Even after the valley comes back to life, enemies remain. Yet God makes it clear that He will defend His people and ultimately reveal His glory among the nations. Then chapter 40 begins Ezekiel’s extraordinary vision of a restored temple. God does not merely promise survival after exile. He gives Ezekiel a vision of a future where His people are restored and His presence is once again at the center.
We know that Jesus stands before graves and calls the dead to life. Through His own death and resurrection, He proves that death itself does not get the final word. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus breathes new life into people who could never revive themselves. The valley of dry bones reminds us that resurrection is not about trying harder to become alive. It is about receiving life from the One who conquered death.
